Noise! It’s all around us. From the soft rumbling of our appliances to the hustle and bustle of traffic. We moved from the city of Chicago – under the O’Hare flight path, several blocks away from the Chicago Northwestern Railroad tracks and only steps away from the Eden’s Expressway – to five acres of grass and forest near Freeport ,Illinois about 25 years ago. The first night we lay in our beds, eyes wide open, not sleeping because…it was too quiet. We could hear frogs, crickets, and other bumps in the night.
Now I relish that noise. The birds first thing in the morning. Our rooster waking up the hens and anyone else in the vicinity. The hoot of owls at night. The cry of coyotes in the distance. The unique squawk of pheasants in the fields surrounding our house. And, the faraway bellow of cows. It’s a peaceful noise.
I need noise when I write. Actually, noise that drowns out other noises. In Book 17 I had Bradley mentioned a website I LOVE – www.mynoise.net. It’s free (although I donate to get some extra perks) and it’s wonderful. I love the thunderstorms noises when I sleep, the fire crackling noise when I’m cold and the Irish seacoast noises when I’m writing. There are also some eerie noises I use when I am writing especially scary scenes. There are even noises specifically created for people with ADHD that will help them concentrate.
Here’s a video of some of the noises I heard today on my midday walk. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Oh, by the way, the heavy breathing in the background is not me being stalked by a werewolf, it’s just Nike, Sarah’s chocolate lab, enjoying the walk as much as I did.
Noise – don’t you just love it!
I take 30 second videos of sounds and places that I love. I listen and watch them on my phone on days that are stressful.
